Today we are going to use rolled paper flowers to create a beautiful star that you can use in your Fourth of July decor!
So in my last post, I shared with you how to make rolled paper roses. It was so much fun! I love, love, love how realistic the roses looked when formed with this technique.
When I first started making rolled flowers, I quickly fell in love with the technique. I made quite a few flowers before I realized that they were….well, they were just piling up!
I needed a purpose for the flowers, and that is what this project is all about. Giving a purpose to your rolled paper roses.
Watch my short video on how to make a star with your rolled paper flowers:
When I put together the paper roses project, I made several red, white, and blue roses because I already knew I wanted to do something special with them for the Fourth of July, a big USA holiday.
Once you have your rolled flowers created, this project comes together quickly.

Patterns for Rolled Paper Flowers
The base of this project is a star. I have created a basic star shape SVG for you (it’s in my Maker Library) or you could just design your own star in Cricut Design Space or other cutting software.
The star of this star project is the rolled paper rose you made in the last project. You can find the directions in How To Make Amazing Rolled Paper Roses. The rose SVGs are in my Maker Library – it’s free to join!
You will need to make approximately:
- 8 -10 blue rolled paper roses
- 8 – 10 red rolled paper roses
- 7 – 8 white rolled paper roses
The number of roses you will need depends on how big your star base is and how tightly/loosely you roll your flowers.
If you need help with creating the rolled paper roses, refer to How To Make Amazing Rolled Paper Roses and the step-by-step tutorial in my Maker Library. I also have a video tutorial at Payne & Simple Makes. Check it out!
Simple Process, Simple Fourth of July Project
Once you have created the rolled paper roses, the rest of the project is simple!
Prep Your Base
First, you need to cut out your star base. I have included both an SVG and a PDF pattern in my maker library for you.
So what type of cardboard should you use? I used a flat, fairly thin piece of cardboard that was used as packing material in some materials that was shipped to me. I save these because they are sturdy and come in handy for projects like this one!
I used the SVG and cut the star on my Cricut Maker. Although I changed the ‘Material’ to flat cardboard, the software said to use the fine-point blade. I think I did 10 passes, but it still did not cut all the way through the cardboard. I finished up with my craft knife.
(The next time I use this type of cardboard I will change the material to something that requires either the deep point blade or the knife blade to see if that works better.)
Time to Glue
Begin gluing the blue roses onto two adjacent star arms. Be sure they connect at the bases.
Next, choose a star arm to the right or left of the blue points. Glue one red rose at the point or tip.
Then, on the same arm, glue two white roses ACROSS the star arm.
Important: Make sure to glue your stripes ACROSS the star points, so that each color (red or white) leads away from the blue roses.
For the next stripe, glue red roses (4 red roses). This was my longest row because it ran from the base of the blue roses all the way to the point or tip of the opposite star arm.
Follow up with a rose of three white roses, then a row of two red roses, a row of two white roses. Finish with one red rose at the top of the arm opposite of where you started.
After all of the roses are glued on the star, check to see if you have any gaps where you can see the cardboard base. Once I finished glueing on my ‘stripes’ I realized I had three gaps.
One of the gaps was large enough that I could add another small blue rose.
The other two gaps were too small for an entire rose, so I cut a length of two petals off of extra rose spirals. I shaped the petals a bit and tucked them under an flower and glued them in place.
And that’s it! A great Fourth of July project using rolled paper flowers!
